Biography

Widely acknowledged as one of the fathers of Holistic and Mind-Body Medicine, Dr. Emmett Miller is a physician, poet, musician, coach and master storyteller, whose multicultural heritage has given him a unique perspective on medicine.

His chief contributions have been his discoveries of how thoughts, emotions, and mental images can be guided to have a profound impact on illnesses, wellness, and performance. Having studied computer systems and programming beginning in 1962, he was able to see in his clinical practice of Family Medicine that the mind functions much like a biocomputer; it perceives, reasons, and feels the way it was programmed, and that self-induced altered states (e.g., deep relaxation, meditation, hypnosis) make it possible to alter this programming through the use of mental imagery.

Dr. Miller’s first book, Selective Awareness – Introduction to the Medicine of Mind and Body (1973), introduced his concepts of guided imagery and software for the mind, and the powerful healing tool he had invented, the guided imagery tape. For the first time the tools of deep relaxation and guided imagery were made available throughout the world. These tools are now the most commonly used of all the approaches of modern complementary or integral medicine. Miller’s recordings, distributed on CDs and DVDs, and as Internet downloads, have remained the choice of conventional as well as complementary and alternative health professionals for more than 35 years.

A graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Miller has been a lecturer and preceptor at Stanford University and The University of California, as well as other universities and medical schools. In 1977, he gained international prominence as a founder and Medical Director of the Cancer Support and Education Center, the first cancer self-help center in the world. In 1987, as a co-convener of the groundbreaking California State Task Force on Self-Esteem, he expanded his principles of personal change to the collective level.

Dr. Miller maintains a practice in Los Altos and in Nevada City, California, limited to Mind-Body Medicine and Peak Performance Coaching for individuals, leaders, and organizations.
