BA Honours Journalism and Communication Studies

Why study the BA Honours Journalism and Communication Studies?

The BA (Honours) Journalism and Communication degree enables you to combine the acquisition of practical skills with a thorough academic grounding in some of the most exciting ideas, theories and knowledge about the media today. The Honours degree studies both traditional print-based journalism and digital-new media, giving students the chance to think broadly about future career plans. For those students who are interested in the rapidly changing field of journalism, who want to write, and also to understand how journalism and other forms of media communication work, the BA (Honours) Journalism and Communication degree is the ideal course.

This distinctive course marries a range of practical journalistic skills with a comprehensive and critical theoretical framework informed by current debates about the social, cultural and political implications of communication.

Students will be encouraged to develop their own pathway through the complex field of contemporary media, and taught to combine practical skills with a challenging and innovative approach to studying a wide range of journalistic and communication areas, through open-ended projects and work placements relating to academic contexts.

Aims of the programme

The programme aims to:
  • Aid students to develop both a theoretical understanding of and practical abilities in the field of contemporary journalism and media communications;
  • Develop students’ generic intellectual skills, especially those of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, and extend their ability to access, extrapolate and work critically with information from a wide range of sources and a wide range of media;
  • Guide students to develop graduate employability skills appropriate to the level and to the field of their studies and help them to apply their specialist abilities in cognate areas of communication in contemporary society
Career Opportunities

The BA (Honours) Journalism and Communication Studies degree has been designed with a specific understanding of the extension of journalistic practices and of communications production throughout the economy. Equally, the continuing development and dissemination of digital communications technologies provide an opportunity for students to work innovatively and gainfully as freelancers. The curriculum is designed to equip students with skills allowing them to benefit from this situation. Links with the employment market through work placement provision; visiting speakers from relevant sections of the media industry; staff with ongoing practical and professional experience all help students in furthering their career goals.

Study Mode and Intakes

The BA (Honours) Journalism and Communication programme is normally studied full-time over three years. The University Academic Calendar consists of two (2) terms a year. New students are admitted to the programme in the Autumn Term which starts in September each year.

Duration, Timings and Attendance

Classes are held at our Dubai Knowledge Village campus (Block 16) during the week (Sunday to Thursday) between 8:30am and 6:00pm. Attending scheduled weekly classes is an important requirement for completion of this programme.

The programme is divided into study units called modules. These modules are taught over 24 teaching weeks based on the University’s Learning Framework.

Teaching and Learning

Taught modules are devised to ensure active learning both of the subject matter and of the skills essential to undergraduate level study. Weekly class time is typically divided into formal lectures and seminars, which are smaller discussion groups, and where appropriate, workshops and tutorial sessions. In addition to scheduled class time, students are expected to undertake independent study doing research work, preparing for lectures and seminars and working in groups.

A number of assessment methods are used at Middlesex University, and these vary depending on the content of the modules being taught. Assessment comprises a mixture of coursework, peer review, presentations and portfolio work. For example, you may give an oral presentation, read and comment on an academic article or write an academic essay. Case studies are used extensively. In addition, each module has a comprehensive range of on-line resources available to enhance your studies with us. You will receive detailed module handbooks each year with information on teaching and learning strategies, assessment methods and reading materials.
