Tourism is a major phenomenon that has come to affect virtually everywhere on the globe over the past fifty years. While tourists have been around for a much longer period, the massive growth area in leisure time and wealth and the rapid improvements in transport and communications have all transformed tourism into one of the fastest growing and dynamic
industries. This programme thus offers students the exciting opportunity of specializing in this growth industry, where the global nature of tourism offers excellent career prospects around the world. Tourism is a multi-faceted sector which
is constantly evolving to meet the customer's needs. Middlesex offers students opportunities to study this subject with marketing, where students will understand the academic and applied aspects of marketing, and the relationship
between marketing and tourism. A variety of assessment methods are used, comprising of a mixture of examinations, coursework, class tests, peer review, individual and group presentations, learning diaries and portfolio work.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Tourism students will participate in a range of field trips depending upon the modules chosen. Students will observe and record patterns of tourist activity, look at tourism impacts and talk to tourism providers and marketers. Field trips to various tourism, hospitality and heritage venues provide students with a real-world experience of the issues involved in the industry and enhance their academic skills. The programme is taught by academics who have published widely and who have significant links with the industry. Students are encouraged to participate in internships through establishing
close ties with a range of organizations and companies.
PROGRAMME CONTENT
The International Tourism Management and Marketing programme will introduce students to basic principles and tools of
marketing, market research skills and strategic marketing directives, as well as understand the current trends of international tourism and the nature of the business environment of tourism. Students with look at the products, structure and services of the tourism industry, investigating ways in which tourism markets and niche markets operate. They will be equipped with the ability to critically understand the dynamic and changing nature of tourism. The programme is essentially multi-disciplinary and develops a wide range of transferable skills pertinent to the service sector industry. In the final year students can gain more specialist knowledge concerning the conceptual interconnections between tourism and marketing. Significant emphasis will be placed on planning mechanisms in marketing and policy mechanisms concerning
the strategic management and promotion of tourism destinations. |

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
This degree assists students in acquiring excellent practical and theoretical skills required to succeed in a variety of fields. Potential posts include marketing officers, tourism managers and travel consultants. Opportunities exist in such areas as the travel media, travel agencies, events management, airlines, hotels and other organisaI tions in the hospitality, tourism,
event, recreation and sport industries. Opportunities exist not only in the private sector but also the public (government) sector, e.g., National Tourism Boards. As the tourism industry is essentially a service sector industry graduates often seek work in such related sectors as banking, finance and the retail industry. Importantly, graduates have relevant marketing knowledge and skills and thus can expect to find work in business areas not specifically related to tourism, especially in the field of marketing and public relations. Students may also go on to postgraduate study (examples being MAs in 'Marketing and Communications', 'International Tourism Management' and 'Event Management').
