BA Honours International Tourism Management with HRM

PROGRAMME DETAILS

Tourism and related service industries have come to replace the manufacturing industry as a nation’s major employer and for some countries tourism is now their major national earner. The relationship between tourism and human resource management is highly relevant in that the tourism industries are multi-faceted and require a diverse range of employment resources and personnel, especially to create a talented, dynamic and vibrant workforce. This programme recognises that a multidisciplinary approach is highly appropriate, embracing such elements as operations management, people management and service work, knowledge management and cross-cultural awareness. It also critically acknowledges the scale of this industry and how it actually impacts socioeconomic, commercial and environmental aspects of the developed as well as the developing world. Assessment comprises a mixture of examinations, coursework, peer review, presentations (group & individual) and portfolio work. Therefore, tourism combines well with Human Resources where successful management is vital for any organisation’s development and institutional growth.

SPECIAL FEATURES

With adventurous field trips, an international environment, specialist staff and distinctive modules – students are offered a fascinating journey to a career in the world’s fastest-growing industry. As human resource management is also closely related to tourism’s subsector: the hospitality industry, this dimension is certainly integral to this programme; where there are opportunities to engage in site visits of hotels and restaurants as well as understand other closely related industries, e.g., the event industry. Teaching staff combine industrial experience with a strong ability to teach, consult and research. .

PROGRAMME CONTENT

In this programme students will gain an understanding of various aspects of tourism: significance and impact, the products and structure of the tourism industry and its business environment; the operation of the tourist (and hospitality) market; current global tourism trends, planning directives and industry-related policies. Importantly, the programme concentrates on understanding how the tourism industry operates in an internationalized environment, as well as provides an in-depth understanding of the academic and applied aspects of Human Resource Management. The programme attempts to understand the relationship between HRM and Tourism through studying the role of HRM in the context of organizations, the service industry and a globalising world.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This degree assists students in acquiring excellent practical and theoretical skills required to succeed in a variety of fields. Potential posts include HR officers, client account managers, tourism managers and travel consultants. Opportunities exist in such areas as the national and international Tourism Boards, travel media, travel agencies, event and venue management, airlines / airports, hotels and other organisations in the hospitality, tourism, recreation and sport industries. The global nature of tourism offers excellent career prospects around the world. Students may also go on to postgraduate study (examples being MAs in ‘International Human Resource Management’, ‘Hospitality and Tourism Management’, and ‘Hotel and Hospitality Management’). As the tourism industry is essentially a service sector industry, it is quite common for students to positively embrace career opportunities in such related sectors as banking, finance and the retail industries
