COURSE OVERVIEW
The growth and change in the
international tourism industry has
been paralleled by opportunities
to study hospitality in both its
academic and applied aspects.
This programme provides a bridge
between students' previous study
on a higher national diploma or
equivalent qualification, or a degree.
The award consists of four
distinct level three, year long modules,
specially designed to meet
the needs of this particular student
population. Students who do
not meet the entry requirements
for the final year top-up may be
eligible to study this programme
by taking an extra module relating
to work based learning. Hospitality
Management programme
is intended for students to take a
broader view of both their profession
and the service sector. Hospitality
is indeed a diverse industry,
stretching beyond the study of the
hotel sector to a knowledge-base
that considers a whole range of
related sectors (e.g., event, venues,
tourism, transport and catering
sectors). This course therefore
enables students to complete their
academic understanding of the
fundamentals of hospitality management.
Assessment comprises
a mixture of examinations, coursework,
peer review, presentations,
case studies and portfolio work.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Students will engage in fieldwork
for some components, having the
advantage of providing students
with the chance to experience
at first hand the issues raised in
the classroom based modules.
The programmes are taught by
lecturers who have industry and
academic expertise, as well as an
international publication Professionals working in industry
will also provide visiting guest appearances
on the programme.
PROGRAMME CONTENT
The one year programme consists
of one level three module examining
the near and far environments
through close study of hospitality
business strategy. A second
module looks at the wider service
industry whilst a third module in
consulting gives students opportunities
to put theory to practice.
Finally, the programme includes
a fourth module that develops
students' ability to manage both
personal and organisational
change so as to progress through
the bridge between university and
work, thereby developing graduate
skills to a high level. In this programme
students will gain an understanding
of such key aspects of
the hospitality industry as:
- Systematic and strategic
methodologies / approaches
in industries relating to hotels,
destinations, restaurants,
transport, special events and
festivals
- Organisational dynamics, the
service setting and global
operations
- Operational management and
employee relations
- Marketing practices in the
hospitality, tourism and the
food and beverage industries

- Work Based Learning (an
additional module only taken
if students have lower entry
grades than normal)

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
This programme enables students to gain an excellent grounding in the Hospitality Management sector.
Graduates from this programme could expect to seek management positions within one of the world's fastest
growing industries. Students may also go on to postgraduate study (examples being MAs in 'Human Resource
Management', 'International Hospitality Management', 'International Event Management', and 'Hotel and
Restaurant Management'). As this degree emphasises management components, it is quite common for
students to positively embrace career opportunities in a range of other business sectors.
