BA Honours Hospitality Management (Top-Up)

COURSE OVERVIEW

The growth and change in the international tourism industry has been paralleled by opportunities to study hospitality in both its academic and applied aspects. This programme provides a bridge between students' previous study on a higher national diploma or equivalent qualification, or a degree. The award consists of four distinct level three, year long modules, specially designed to meet the needs of this particular student population. Students who do not meet the entry requirements for the final year top-up may be eligible to study this programme by taking an extra module relating to work based learning. Hospitality Management programme is intended for students to take a broader view of both their profession and the service sector. Hospitality is indeed a diverse industry, stretching beyond the study of the hotel sector to a knowledge-base that considers a whole range of related sectors (e.g., event, venues, tourism, transport and catering sectors). This course therefore enables students to complete their academic understanding of the fundamentals of hospitality management. Assessment comprises a mixture of examinations, coursework, peer review, presentations, case studies and portfolio work.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Students will engage in fieldwork for some components, having the advantage of providing students with the chance to experience at first hand the issues raised in the classroom based modules. The programmes are taught by lecturers who have industry and academic expertise, as well as an international publication Professionals working in industry will also provide visiting guest appearances on the programme.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

The one year programme consists of one level three module examining the near and far environments through close study of hospitality business strategy. A second module looks at the wider service industry whilst a third module in consulting gives students opportunities to put theory to practice. Finally, the programme includes a fourth module that develops students' ability to manage both personal and organisational change so as to progress through the bridge between university and work, thereby developing graduate skills to a high level. In this programme students will gain an understanding of such key aspects of the hospitality industry as:
  • Systematic and strategic methodologies / approaches in industries relating to hotels, destinations, restaurants, transport, special events and festivals
  • Organisational dynamics, the service setting and global operations
  • Operational management and employee relations
  • Marketing practices in the hospitality, tourism and the food and beverage industries
MODULES
  • Strategic Management in the Hospitality Environment
  • The Service Encounter
  • Managing Individual and Organisational Change
  • Consulting in Organisation
  • Work Based Learning (an additional module only taken if students have lower entry grades than normal)
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This programme enables students to gain an excellent grounding in the Hospitality Management sector. Graduates from this programme could expect to seek management positions within one of the world's fastest growing industries. Students may also go on to postgraduate study (examples being MAs in 'Human Resource Management', 'International Hospitality Management', 'International Event Management', and 'Hotel and Restaurant Management'). As this degree emphasises management components, it is quite common for students to positively embrace career opportunities in a range of other business sectors.
