BA Honours International Business

Why study the BA (Honours) International Business?

The BA Honours International Business degree will help students gain a thorough understanding of how international and multinational firms operate and an appreciation of how differing cultures affect business life. The programme explores international issues in finance and marketing. Students will also learn the fundamentals of human resource management, operations management and information systems.

This programme aims to develop knowledge and skills needed by those students wishing to follow an international business career encompassing different cultures. The programme will be attractive to those who have already lived, studied or worked in more than one country. Languages are not included in the syllabus, but we expect that those joining the programme will already be fluent in another language as well as English. Students’ interest and enthusiasm for international work is developed through a progressively international business syllabus. Students can also take advantage of work placement and internship opportunities offered through the Careers and Employability Service at the University.

Aims of the programme

The programme aims to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of business from an international perspective, including:

  • stakeholders: their expectations and behaviour
  • the environment of business and its impact on strategy
  • products: design, production and distribution
  • business resources: acquisition, application and control
  • business processes: planning, improvement and control
  • organisations: their functions, structure and management
  • international business management
On completion of the programme, students will be able to:
  • locate, categorise, prioritise, and synthesise information necessary for business purposes in an international environment
  • interpret business reports and evaluate performance
  • select and apply business monitoring and control techniques
  • set objectives for business change and plan implementation
  • identify and demonstrate interpersonal skills appropriate to a given business situation
Future Careers

Graduates will be well prepared for a satisfying and rewarding career with internationally-oriented trade and investment organisations or within the public and private sectors in management, strategic planning, research, corporate/ government relations and public relations. Common job titles include International Trade Specialist, Import/Export Agent, Foreign Relations Advisor, Foreign Sales Representative and International Management Consultant. Frequent employers include banks, import/export corporations, multinational manufacturers, consulting firms, international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), electronics companies and transportation industries like shipping and airlines.

Our Careers and Employability Service (CES) offers you a range of support both while you’re studying with us, and after you’ve graduated.

Study Mode and Intakes

The BA (Honours) International Business programme is normally studied full-time over three years. New students are admitted to the programme in the Autumn Term which starts in September each year.

Duration, Timings and Attendance

Classes are held at our Dubai Knowledge Village campus (Block 16) during the week (Sunday to Thursday) between 8:30am and 6:00pm. Attending scheduled weekly classes is an important requirement for completion of this programme. The programme is divided into study units called modules. These modules are taught over 24 teaching weeks based on the University’s Learning Framework.

Teaching and Learning

Taught modules are devised to ensure active learning both of the subject matter and of the skills essential to undergraduate level study. Weekly class time is typically divided into formal lectures and seminars, which are smaller discussion groups, and where appropriate, workshops and tutorial sessions. In addition to scheduled class time, students are expected to undertake independent study doing research work, preparing for lectures and seminars and working in groups.

A number of assessment methods are used at Middlesex University, and these vary depending on the content of the modules being taught. Assessment comprises a mixture of coursework, peer review, presentations and portfolio work. For example, you may give an oral presentation, read and comment on an academic article or write an academic essay. Case studies are used extensively. In addition, each module has a comprehensive range of on-line resources available to enhance your studies with us. You will receive detailed module handbooks each year with information on teaching and learning strategies, assessment methods and reading materials.
